BEFORE YOU BUY A DOG

What dog to choose

Never follow fashion. Always take into account the specifics of the breed, your time, housing and financial possibilities.

Join the nearest branch of the Kennel Club in Poland (addresses at www.zkwp.pl) and talk about the breeds you are interested in. Ask for addresses of breeders. Visit the dog show and carefully look at the breeds you are interested in. Talk to owners and breeders.

Big dog – think will you be able to provide him with the right dose of movement, consistent upbringing and proper training? A badly brought up dog can mean problems, both for you, for the environment and for yourself.

Utility / hunting dog – will you provide him with the right dose of work and the opportunity to use energy?

Long-haired miniature – requires systematic care with appropriately selected cosmetics.

Primitive or greyhound dog – be prepared for being independent, cat-like. You must be very patient, because this dog requires a great deal of forgiveness. He decides when he wants to come to the owner.

Shepherd or terrier – these are usually dogs that require ingenious and intense play, are quickly bored and need new stimuli constantly, are you able to cope with it?

Buying a dog

If you decide on a specific breed, the best solution is to visit the nearest branch of the Polish Composers’ Union, where you will receive information about registered breedings. Such information is also often provided by phone.

You can also browse the branches’ websites, where you can find current data on puppies.

You will not buy a puppy at an exhibition of purebred dogs, because there is a legal ban on such sales.

If you decide to buy a dog, be sure to sign the contract, it is a simple procedure that can save you a lot of trouble if you get into trouble later. In this agreement, in addition to the data of the breeder and the new owner should include: dog’s data, a record that the animal is healthy, a record about whether it is an animal intended for further breeding or non-breeding and of course the amount you will pay for the puppy.

In addition to the contract, you should receive a health book or passport (with certified vaccinations and deworming), as well as tips on feeding and caring for the dog. Many breeders also equip the puppy with a layette.

Don’t forget about the birth certificate or pedigree. Puppies will be equipped with a record containing the seal of the department and the signature of its representative and a hologram of the ZKwP (the breeder receives the record from the ZKwP branch after the so-called litter control).

The record is a confirmation of the dog’s raciality, contains data about him and his parents as well as the breeder and owner.

The pedigree is its extension with subsequent generations and additional data.
